Nick Carmichael

RCVS recognised specialist in clinical pathology
Nick graduated from Edinburgh in 1980 with an Honours degree in Pathological Sciences and in 1982 as a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. After a year with the PDSA in London, he completed a Diploma of Veterinary Clinical Studies (Small Animal) at the University of Sydney 1985. For the following seven years he worked in Small Animal Practice undertaking a mixture of first and second opinion work. Nick joined Idexx (formerly Grange Laboratories), the largest veterinary laboratory in the UK in 1992 as Head of Clinical Pathology with responsibility for the interpretation of haematology, biochemistry and endocrinology results. His clinical interests include haematology, coagulation, endocrine and neurological disease. As well as reporting on all aspects of Clinical Pathology he also has a special interest in cytology and the laboratory evaluation of CSF. In 2003 Nick became a diplomate of the Royal college of Pathologists in veterinary clinical pathology. Nick is treasurer of the ESVCP and referees papers for The Journal of Small Animal Practice, The Veterinary Record and The European Journal of Companion Animal Practice. Nick is co-founder and veterinary director of CTDS.

John Chitty

John qualified from the Royal Veterinary College 1990 and then later gained his
RCVS Certificate in Zoological Medicine in 2000. As well as being a consultant for EVDS, John is a partner in Strathmore Veterinary Clinic, a small animal and exotics practice in Hampshire, where the caseload is approximately 80%+ avian/ exotic/ small mammal/ zoo animals with both first opinion and referral cases seen. John has been involved in numerous publications including co-editor of "BSAVA Manual of Psittacine Birds 2nd Edition" and
co-editor of "Journal of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians".
John is a respected and active member of the zoological and exotic veterinary community being UK representative to the Board of Directors of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), Secretary to the European Board of the AAV, President of the Veterinary Invertebrate Society, Veterinary Consultant to Marwell Zoological Park, The Hawk Conservancy Trust, Paultons Park and the Great Bustard Reintroduction Project, Advisor to BIAZA Falconiformes/ Owl and Terrestrial Invertebrates Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs), Advisor to European Falconiformes and Terrestrial Invertebrate TAGs and Advisor to Oriental White-Backed Vulture EEP. In addition John is a visiting lecturer on exotic animal behaviour at Southampton University.

Doug Hayward

Doug was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. After completing his schooling, he attended the University of Pietermaritzburg until 1995 when he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Grassland Science. He then attended the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort, South Africa and graduated as a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2000. After six months in South Africa working in a mixed avian/small animal practice, he emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2001. After spending one and a half years in small animal practice in Luton, he took six months off from veterinary practice to travel, followed by two and a half years in small animal practice in Epsom. He joined CTDS in February 2006 as Resident in Clinical Pathology to pursue his interest in veterinary laboratory diagnostics and cytology.

Mark Diamond
BSc (Hons), ACA, MBA
Mark graduated from St. Andrews University with an Honours Degree in
Mathematics and Statistics and Qualified as a Chartered Accountant in
1985. He gained an MBA from the Cranfield School of Management in 1989. Mark was the Managing Director of Kirton Holdings Limited the UK’s largest
supplier of Specialist Seating. Kirton has a turnover of £6.2 million
and employs 70 people. Previously MD worked in the city for CLCM in
London and New York where he was Managing Director of CLS(USA) Inc. MJD
was Managing Director of 3 Arrows Limited, a major UK accident
assistance business. Mark is a director of EVDS.

Jaime Macdonald
AIBMS
Jaime entered laboratory work working for the MAFF (DEFRA) at Norwich VIC working mainly in bacteriology and parasitology and then later within clinical chemistry. During this time Jaime was trained in bacteriology, parasitology, clinical chemistry & haematology and eventually headed the clinical chemistry laboratory. Following after state review and the merger of the Norwich and Cambridge sites in Bury St Edmunds, he joined a large private veterinary practice laboratory (Chapelfield) and later became manager of Vauxhall laboratories. This is where Jaimes specific interests in in exotics started.
After 7 years Jaime was offered a position at Grendale Laboratories as their Laboratory Manager & Head of Technical Services. In December 1999 Jaime set up MEDLAB, in partnership with Mike Stanford, which soon became established as a specialist exotic diagnostic laboratory.
Jaime has authored and co-authored several papers on exotics including author of several exotic papers including "Incidence of Yersinia spp in Chelonians","
Development of ionised calcium ranges in African Greys",
" Hyperthyroidism in Green Iguanas", "Haematology and blood biochemistry values for the Eurasian badger (Meles meles)" and "Treatment of suspected Plasmodium spp in Start Tortoises". Jaime is the co-author of "Clinical Pathology of Reptiles" chapter, NAVC 1999.
Jaime is Head of Laboratory Services for EVDS.

Karen Scott
BSc, AIBMS, CertMan
Karen trained in both human and animal Haematology and Biochemistry firstly at the Royal Marsden Hospital and then later at Covance Laboratories, the UK’s largest Pharmaceutical CRO.
From 1998 until 2003, Karen was Client Services and Marketing Manager for IDEXX Laboratories, the UK’s largest private veterinary laboratory. As well as being a qualified biomedical scientist, she holds a BSc in Genetics and a Certificate in Management and has over 15 years experience in sample logistics, laboratory processing and operational management. Karen co-authored "Laboratory Diagnostics - Textbook of Veterinary Nursing, 2003"
Karen is laboratory director for CTDS.

Andrew Torrance
MA, Vet MB, PhD, MRCVS, Diplomate ACVIM, Diplomate AVCP,
RCVS recognised specialist in clinical pathology
Andy trained at Cambridge University, UK and Michigan State University, USA. He obtained a doctorate from the University of London in veterinary physiology. He holds two post graduate diplomas that distinguish him as a specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and Medicine. He has written numerous papers and delivered lectures to veterinary surgeons nationally and internationally. Andy was the Director of Clinical Pathology within Axiom, the UK’s second largest private veterinary laboratory and is presently co-founder of TDDS.
